The Mediterranean salt-steppe proliferates in high salinity soils - very dry especially in the summer -; it is an extreme environment conditioned by the presence of sea water, where organisms at the limits of biological possibilities proliferate; they are able to withstand large changes in the water balance of the entire ecosystem. Inside the park, the Mediterranean salt steppes can be met mainly around the rivulets behind the dunes - favored by stagnant water - and with one of two types: the salicornia lands and the juncus land.
The salicornia land grows in salty mud that are formed in the winter on sediment deposits flooded by sea water; in summer, once dried up, saline crusts emerge. It is characterized by a prevalence of Salicornia glauca vegetation.
The juncus land is common, instead, on soils with lower water stagnation, which dominate the common black rush and the plantago crassifolia; other interesting species that are found in this habitat are the common limonium and limonium virgatum
