TOMATO REGINA OF TORRE CANNE (SLOW FOOD PRESIDIUM)

It is a small and round tomato, with limited water requirements, collected in the summer and  until late winter; the thick skin (due to brackish water) makes this variety resistant to pests and suitable for long-term storage in clusters - the ramasole - joined by hand from cotton thread and hung up. The name comes from its calyx that, growing up, takes the shape of a crown (regina means queen). With the advent of the greenhouse cultivation, this local variety declined progressively; Nevertheless the local families have continued to grow them in the traditional manner in their small gardens, retaining and reproducing each year the original seed of the tomato Regina.
